In blurlay, two portrait-format plasma displays face each other, each topped with a spotlight and a webcam, and visitors stand in the space between them. The cameras take in the light reflected from the visitor’s body as live input, one from the front and one from behind. Real-time computer vision processing turns each view into a blurred image in which only the most brightly lit areas come into focus. Each display then overlays and blends its own view with the view from the opposite side.
Facing either display, visitors see their front and back layered into a single figure. As they move toward one light, that side comes into focus while the other softens into blur. Distance becomes the measure of visibility, and recognition and distortion keep trading places as the body turns between the two lights.
