artiststatement is a book made from the language that surrounds art. Using Python, I collected news articles and blog posts about the arts, split their texts apart word by word, and recompiled them into an alphabetical index. Each word appears as many times as it was written, so the book reads as long runs of the same word repeated, page after page.

Stripped of sentences, writing about art becomes a record of its own vocabulary. What remains is less an argument than a measure of emphasis, showing which words the field keeps returning to. Bound as a single volume, the collected text becomes one continuous statement, written by no one and by everyone who writes about art.
